The Cameroon Airlines Flight 786 (flight number UY786 ) was a domestic flight of the Cameroon Airlines from Douala airport to airport Garoua with a stopover at the airport Yaounde . On August 30, 1984, a serious incident occurred on this flight when a Boeing 737-2H7C with the aircraft registration TJ-CBD suffered an uncontrolled engine damage and burned out while taxiing to the runway at Douala Airport. Two people were killed in the accident.

Airplane and occupants

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2H7C, which was 7 years and 7 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton , Washington , and made its maiden flight on February 15, 1977, before being delivered to Cameroon Airlines in March of the same year. The aircraft had the factory number 21295, it was the 484th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration TJ-CBD . The twin- engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-15 engines.

There were 116 people on board, including a crew of seven and 109 passengers.

the accident

The machine was scheduled to fly to Garoua Airport that day , with a stopover at Yaoundé Airport . While taxiing to the runway, the Boeing suffered engine damage on the tarmac, with engine number 2 exploding. Flying debris broke through the wing and the tank inside. The kerosene in it ignited and a fire broke out. An immediate evacuation was initiated, but two passengers were killed in the fire. The machine was completely destroyed by the fire.

consequences

According to Jean Louis Angounou, a former Cameroon Airlines pilot who was interviewed by Le Jour Quotidien in May 2009 , the exact cause of the accident had never been determined because "in Cameroon some investigations that have started never end".
