history

Camp Darby

US usage

The depot initially served to supply the US occupation troops in Austria and, after the signing of the Austrian State Treaty of 1955, was a transit station for the troops withdrawn from there and their equipment. During the Cold War , Camp Darby supported the relatively small US garrison in Vicenza and other US units in the Mediterranean.

During the Iraq war , US troops were mainly supplied from Camp Darby. Since Italy is ideally suited as a replenishment base for troops stationed in the Middle East, the military depot acquired increased strategic importance after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In 2009, in addition to the USAG Livorno garrison, the FST, B Det., 208th Finance Battalion , the 3 / 405th Army Field Support Brigade , the 509th Signal Battalion , the 66th MI , the 839th Transportation Battalion and the AFN Livorno were stationed at Camp Darby . Since 2012, the depot has been subordinate to the US garrison command in Vicenza. The 173rd US Airborne Brigade has been stationed there since 2000 .

The camp is a controversial topic among the local Italian population, among other things because of the stored nuclear weapons.

Italian shared use

The special forces command of the Italian Army has been based in the northern area of Camp Darby since 2020. Immediately north of Camp Darby is a research facility of the Italian military, which was involved in the Italian nuclear weapons program in the 1960s .
