Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton
The Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton ( Camp Pendleton ) is a base of the US Marine Corps between Oceanside and San Clemente , north of San Diego in southern California on the Pacific Coast of the United States .
The original purpose of building it in 1942 was to train Marines for use in World War II . The base is named in honor of Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton , who long campaigned to build military infrastructure along the west coast. She is u. a. the home base for the Fleet Marine Force in the Pacific and the I. Marine Expeditionary Force .
Camp Pendleton is owned by the US federal government; all other military facilities are owned by the respective states or nations and are leased by the US military.

Second World War
In the early 1940s , the US Army and Marine Corps searched for a large piece of land to set up a training camp. While the US Army lost interest in the project over time, it was announced in February 1942 that an area of approximately 496 km² of Rancho Santa Margarita y Los Flores would be used to build the largest base of the US Marine Corps. Construction began in April 1942 with the erection of wooden houses, as the base was designed as a temporary location at that time. After five months of construction, the 9th US Marine Regiment under Colonel Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. marched from Camp Elliot in San Diego to Camp Pendleton and was the first to move into the new base. On September 25, 1942, Camp Pendleton was officially opened by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt .

Camp Pendleton now covers an area of approximately 505 km². The approximately 28 km long beach line of the base offers an ideal training location for exercises in amphibious warfare . Around 100,000 soldiers work on the base during the day. Recruits from the nearby Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego receive one month of infantry training on the Edson Range at Camp Pendleton and, after completing basic training, attend the on-site U.S. Marine Corps School of Infantry .
