The Camphill movement is a curative education initiative based on the principles of anthroposophy . Camphills are socio-educational communities and schools that offer support in education, work and in daily life for adults and children with learning disabilities, mental disorders or other special needs.

history

The Camphill movement was founded in 1939 at Kirkton House near Aberdeen , Scotland. The pediatrician Karl König , who emigrated from Vienna, was part of the founding group . He believed that everyone has a healthy inner personality that is independent of physical characteristics, including characteristics that indicate mental retardation or developmental disorders. The role of the school, in which this inner personality is honored, nourished and educated, is important for König. The philosophy of the Camphills, anthroposophy , states that "a perfectly formed spirit and destiny belong to every human being." The basic principles of Karl Königs Camphill School are derived from educational and social concepts, drafted decades earlier by the anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925).

The Camphill pioneers moved their first community for children with disabilities to the nearby Milltimber region of Aberdeen in June 1940 . The movement takes its name from the property, the Camphill Estate. Camphill Estate is now a campus of Camphill School Aberdeen. The school was listed in the HMI / Care Commission Report in 2007 with "very good" to "excellent" standards. There are six camphills in the Aberdeen area.

Today there are over 100 Camphill communities worldwide in more than 20 countries, spread across Europe , North America , Asia and southern Africa .

concept

In the village-like camphills, mentally and physically handicapped people usually live together with the families of their carers. Instead of psychotropic drugs , anthroposophic remedies and applications such as eurythmy therapy and music therapy are used as far as possible .

The community mostly runs a farm with biodynamic agriculture itself . Work is also carried out in kitchens, dairies , bakeries and craft workshops such as weaving mills and pottery . Each member should be able to lead a life appropriate to their abilities and as independent as possible. The daily, weekly and annual schedule is structured according to Camphill-specific needs. This includes meals, devotions and seasonal celebrations with music and other artistic contributions, often based on the anthroposophical model. In addition to the two areas of living and working, cultural life with theater, music and art is the third important element in the community.

Children are mainly taught and looked after in special home special schools for curative education. In addition to continuing education at school, young people have the opportunity to acquire practical skills in workshops, food processing companies, agriculture and horticulture. The focus is not on producing, but on discovering your own interests and opportunities. Adults should be given a meaningful professional life at Camphill.

Many Waldorf students temporarily reside in Camphill communities for an internship or a social year .
