description

The villa was probably built in 1806 for the cotton manufacturer Robert Thomson , who bought the property in 1798. The architect is not listed, but stylistic details suggest David Hamilton . From 1895 the building housed the Museum of Costume . In 1994 it was finally divided into several residential units.

Camphill House is off Pollokshaws Road on the western edge of Queen's Park . Originally it was a country villa outside the city. The two-story, classical- style building has an elongated floor plan. Its masonry consists of polished stone blocks. The northeast-facing front facade is five axes wide, which are arranged in the scheme 1–3–1. A portico with Ionic columns emerges in the center. Colossal pilasters adorn the building edges. There are lattice windows installed. There is a flat sloping platform roof with slate roofing and massive chimneys. A cornice runs underneath .
