The Canadian Football Hall of Fame (CFHOF) is the hall of fame for Canadian football in Hamilton , Ontario . Deserved athletes, coaches and officials are honored in this Hall of Fame.

history

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame was founded in 1962. In a public tender to locate the Hall of Fame, Hamilton won because it was the only city to keep the bidding period. Due to some planning and political misconduct, however, the construction of the Hall of Fame did not begin until 1970. In November 1972, it moved to a building in downtown Hamilton. Due to the low number of visitors, an average of 2.9 visitors per day, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame exhibition was closed on September 19, 2015 for cost reasons and was therefore no longer accessible to the public. Since 2017 the exhibition has been shown in Tim Hortons Field , the stadium of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats .

Admission process

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame accepts between five and seven new members each year. Proposals can be submitted by anyone for discussion, but at least two members of the selection committee must vote for them. After all nominations have been discussed, there is an initial vote. If a person receives less than 33% of the votes, they will not be considered, if they receive more than 75% they will go to the second voting round. People who received between 34% and 74% of the vote do not make it to the second round, but will be discussed again in the following year. The final decisions are made in the second round. There are two main groups: functionaries ( builders ) and players ( players ). Players are divided into amateur, professional and veteran (professionals who last played over 25 years ago). Up to five players are selected annually. Annually three or four players from the Canadian Football League and up to two veterans and amateurs are accepted. The officials are also divided into subgroups: professional and amateur. A maximum of one will be accepted from each of the two categories. If the selection committee or the Hall of Fame Board of Directors is of the opinion that a special person, a severely ill person or a specific group should be admitted, a request for a deviation from the rules may be made. This application must be approved by the board.

Hall of Fame Game

Admission to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame is accompanied by the Canadian Football Hall of Fame Game. The game took place in Hamilton from 1972 to 2008, after which the cities changed annually. It was not until 2016 that it was held again in Hamilton for the first time. The day before the game, the recorded people receive their Hall-of-Fame jacket and their Hall-of-Fame ring during a celebration with exclusively invited guests. The busts will be ceremoniously unveiled during the halftime break of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame Game.
