Canal de Vaucluse

The Canal de Vaucluse is a 15 km long irrigation canal that is part of the Sorgue river network . It starts at Le Thor and ends in the cities of Avignon and Sorgues .

The Canal de Vaucluse begins at the Prize du Prévôt , also known as “La Croupière” , in the municipality of Thor. Its water comes from a branch of the Sorgue d'Entraigues over the Sorgue du Trentin , downstream from the Prise. The canal is entirely part of the Sorgue water network. Hydrologically , the water comes from the Fontaine de Vaucluse , as in the other rivers of the Sorgue . Also etymologically, as various documents and cartographic documents simply refer to the watercourse as “the Sorgue”, just like the majority of the residents.

geography

As the only watercourse in the entire Sorgue network, the canal directs the water of the Fontaine de Vaucluse out of its natural catchment area. A large section of its course was dammed up to cross the threshold of Vedène , where it leaves the valley of the Sorgue towards Avignon and Sorgues .

Hydrography

Further downstream, various locks regulate the flow of the canal. First at the level of the Sept Espassiers , where the Sorgue de la Rode rises, then at Pusque, where five relief valves and four gate valves shut off the canal in the event of heavy rainfall and channel the water into the Rode.

At the level of the Eyguilles distributor, near the Vedène technical college , the canal is divided into two branches . The first, with a length of 11 kilometers , passes Le Pontet , Réalpanier and the Pont des Deux Eaux bridge and meets Avignon, where it flows through the Tour du Saint-Esprit or Tour de la Sorguette . The canal then flows into the Rhône south of the allées de l'Oulle . The second, with a length of 4 km, flows through the city of Sorgues before flowing into the Ouvèze at the level of the district of Pontillac.
