Coordinates: 32 ° 1 ′ S , 115 ° 56 ′ E The City of Canning is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Western Australia . Canning belongs to the metropolis of Perth , the capital of Western Australia. The area is 65 km² and has about 90,000 inhabitants (2016).
Canning takes its name from its location on the Canning River, the southern tributary of the Swan River, and is located about eight to 25 kilometers southeast of Perth city center. The seat of the City Council is in the district of Cannington, where about 6000 inhabitants live (2016).

The Canning Council has ten members. The members are elected by the residents of the four wards (three each from Bannister, Beeliar and Mason Ward, one from the Nicholson Ward). The council chairman and mayor of the city are also recruited from among the councilors.
