Canning basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The canning basin is a sedimentary basin in Western Australia . The basin extends over 506,000 km², of which 430,000 km² are on the mainland. The rest of the area is offshore. The sedimentation basin is partially 15 km thick . It consists of sediments deposited in large depots. The northernmost is the Fitzroy Trough-Gregory Sub-basin complex and the southernmost are the Willara-Sub-basin and Kidson Sub-basin complex . The Fitzroy complex continues to operate offshore.

The canning basin went through several phases in its creation.

In the Devonian Canning Basin, the so-called “Devonian Great Barrier Reef”, a large system of tabular stromatopore reefs with an original length of probably more than 1,000 kilometers, was formed. In the Canning Basin, the conditions for the formation of this huge reef complex were ideal, as the area in the Devonian was near the equator and was covered by a shallow, tropical sea.

In May 1981 the Blina oil field was found, which is 105 km southeast of the city of Derby . It was the first economically viable oil well in the canning basin. The oil was in the Nullara Limestone Formation (Nullar Oil Pool) and in the Lower Carboniferous dolomitic Yellow Drum Formation (Yellow Drum Oil Pool). Not far from there, another oil field was found, the Backreef-1.

The large sedimentary basin was examined over a length of 78,000 km by seismological blasting and a total of 250 wells were drilled.
