Cannon House Office Building
The Cannon House Office Building is the oldest United States Congress office building . It was completed in 1908. The building, in the style of Beaux Arts architecture , is located south of the Capitol between Independence Avenue and New Jersey Avenue.
The main view of the building is architecturally divided into a broad base on which a row of columns with a balustrade and cornice rests. The portico consists of 34 Doric columns framed by pilasters on both sides . Marble and limestone were used as building materials for the facade, the base consists of gray granite. Inside the building, the rotunda in particular is of architectural value. It is surrounded by 18 Corinthian columns that support a dome . Two marble stairs lead from the ground floor to a meeting room with rich ceiling and wall decorations.
The Cannon House Office Building was expanded and remodeled several times in order to meet the changing requirements over time: as early as 1913, six years after the House of Representatives moved in , the office space was becoming scarce and another floor was added. The building was given its current name in 1962 in honor of Joseph Gurney Cannon .
