Cao Kefei

Cao Kefei ( Chinese  曹克 非 ; * 1964 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese theater director , author and translator . It operates in China and Germany. She is the director of the Beijing theater company Ladybird.

Life

Cao Kefei first studied German at the Technical University of Shanghai and then theater studies at the University of Bern. This was followed by an internship at the Schauspielhaus Zürich and at the Neumarkttheater in Zürich. She has translated pieces by Thomas Bernhard , Roland Schimmelpfennig , Dea Loher and Marius von Mayenburg into Chinese , among others . She was the first female director to bring a piece by Thomas Bernhard to the Chinese stage with Die Macht der Gewohnge .

In 2004 Cao Kefei staged a play by her brother Cao Keyuan (曹克 远) at the Beijing People's Theater Endstation - Peking. She also dealt with documentary theater forms and with the production "Together" realized a project on female biographies in contemporary China. In March 2009 she directed the premiere of "In die Mitte des Himmels" by the Chinese lyric poet Duo Duo in Düsseldorf. In 2010 she staged the world premiere of "Der rundere Mond" in the slaughterhouse in Bern. She always creates with interdisciplinary means between theater and the visual arts. In 2013 she was visiting professor at the Institute of Applied Theater Studies at the University of Giessen. In 2017 she published the book "Contemporary Theater in China" in collaboration with Christoph Lepschy and Sabine Heymann.

Cao Kefei lives in Beijing and Berlin.
