Cape Henry Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Virginia Beach , Virginia , USA, at the entrance from the Atlantic Ocean into Chesapeake Bay . Cape Henry Light was built in 1792. In 1881 a second tower was built.
The Cape Henry Lighthouse was the first government-authorized lighthouse in what was then the United States. The first lighthouse was designed and built by New York architect John McComb Jr. , who later helped develop New York City Hall .
Cape Henry Lighthouse has been listed as a structure on the National Register of Historic Places since October 1966 . Since April 1970 the lighthouse has the status of a National Historic Landmark .
The two lighthouses were added to the List of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2002.
