background

The series produced by Hans-Joachim Herwald and staged together with the author is still on the market today with brief interruptions. Records and MCs have sold around 250,000 times. After the Maritim brand was discontinued, the series was then distributed by Ariola (Bertelsmann), then temporarily on the Kolibri label (Record-Partner) until the Maritim label was re-launched (Herrmann Publishing Group). From 2003 the series was re-released as an MC and CD by Maritim and also offered as a download. In 2010 the records were then sold. Today Detective Columbus & Son is only available as a download or stream from various Internet providers.

The name of the title character, "Columbus", is an allusion to the TV inspector Columbo, who was very popular in Germany at the time of its creation . Detective Columbus shares his idiot nature with him.

Author Peter Riesenburg himself has a son named Aki, as does the detective Columbus, who he invented.

The title melody by Natalie Schwering has a length of three minutes and ten seconds, an unusual length for radio play productions. Running gag of the theme music was a saying on the office answering machine that was integrated into the song, which varied from episode to episode. The rest of the background music was a royalty-free composition by Alexander Ester .

The first episode in the series came up with a remarkable guest appearance: the story, real money for false whistles , set in the football milieu , dealt with a bribery scandal. NDR reporter Wolf-Dieter Stubel can be heard here as himself. Other prominent speakers were the then Tagesschau spokesman Werner Veigel , the actors Hanni Vanhaiden , Günter Lüdke and Franz-Josef Steffens . Author Peter Riesenburg has also spoken small roles under changing pseudonyms.
