history

The chapel is considered to be the oldest church in Madeira. In 1419, the first Holy Mass is said to have been celebrated here on the day after the island was discovered and occupied by the Portuguese . Then the first chapel was built as a thank you.

Due to its location, however, the location was exposed to weather influences. During a flood on October 9, 1803, the chapel was almost completely destroyed and the crucifix was pulled into the sea. Only a few days later it was found on the high seas by a seafarer who eventually delivered it to Funchal Cathedral . Later this crucifix came to the rebuilt chapel with a new name, Lord of Miracles , in view of the miracle that it was recovered after so many tragedies.

In 1862 the chapel was dilapidated again. The current structure, which contains remains of the previous buildings and is stylistically linked to them, was consecrated in 1883 . Renewed flood damage made another extensive renovation necessary in 1956.
