Capsus ater is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 5.1 to 6.3 millimeters long. They have a fairly oval-shaped body with black hemielytres and a second antennae , which is thickened towards the tip. The widest part of this limb is more than twice as wide as the narrowest part. The head and pronotum are in the imagos dyed variable from rust-brown to blackish. In the nymphs , they are purple-brown. The males are predominantly black in color, females usually have a reddish head and a reddish pronotum.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed all over Europe to the northern Mediterranean and east across Asia Minor and the Caucasus to Siberia. It was introduced into North America by humans. It is widespread and common in Germany and Austria.

Dry to moderately moist, open to partially shaded habitats with different soil conditions are settled. The species is found both in the lowlands and in montane locations. In the Alps, it rises to over 2000 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The bugs live on various sweet grasses (Poaceae) and seem to have no particular preferences in certain species or genera. They suckle on the reproductive organs as well as on the stalks and leaf tissue. The nymphs usually stay on the deeper parts of the plants and are therefore usually missed when netting with the net. The nymphs can be observed from the end of April to May, the adult bugs from June, rarely in May to August. The females lay their eggs in the hollow blades of grass in June and July.
