Caraguatatuba |
Caraguatatuba is a Brazilian coastal city with about 115,000 inhabitants in the state of São Paulo (SP), about 100 km northeast of Santos and 200 km from São Paulo . The up to 1200 m high Serra do Mar towers right behind the coastal plain . The difference in altitude to the plateau behind is overcome via the Rodovia dos Tamoios (SP-099), a beautiful serpentine road .
history
The city was first founded in 1664/1665 by Manuel de Faria Dória. In 1693, however, a smallpox epidemic broke out, which killed part of the population. The rest fled to the cities of Ubatuba and São Sebastião. Caraguatatuba was abandoned for a long time. On September 27, 1770, the place was raised to "Vila" without political-administrative rights. On April 20, 1857, she was finally promoted to the Vila category with these rights.
On March 18, 1967, huge amounts of rain came down from the sky, causing some of the city's hills to slide down. Hundreds of people and animals have been caught in the mud and carried away or killed by logs and stones. The power supply collapsed. With help from other cities in Brazil, Caraguatatuba was rebuilt in the following years.
climate
The coldest months are June to August with minimum temperatures of 16.0–16.9 ° C, the hottest months are January to March with maximum temperatures of 30.1–30.5 ° C. The lowest precipitation falls between June and August with 68–87 mm, most precipitation is recorded from October to March with 206–270 mm.
economy
There is no bigger industry. In addition to trade, fishing, agriculture and forestry, tourism plays a certain role. There is a long sandy beach on the town, and several larger hotel complexes on the eastern edge. The surrounding coast consists of numerous small, picturesque bays and beaches, the most popular with surfers is Praia Brava. Many tourists also come from the nearby metropolis of São Paulo over the weekend .
