Carcharhinus Coatesi is a shark art from the family of the requiem shark (Carcharhinidae). It occurs in the sea north of Australia from Shark Bay in Western Australia to Fraser Island ( Queensland ), north possibly to New Guinea and lives from the coast to depths of about 120 meters. The species was named in honor of George Coates, whocollected cartilage and other fish on the North Queensland coast.

Appearance and characteristics

Carcharhinus coatesi is a small shark and reaches a maximum length of 87 to 88 cm. Its body is slender and oval or pear-shaped in cross section in the area of the first dorsal fin. This is slightly sickle-shaped and begins behind the tips of the pectoral fin. The second dorsal fin is much smaller, triangular with a broad base and lies symmetrically opposite the sickle-shaped anal fin. The height of the second dorsal fin is 28 to 37% of the height of the first dorsal fin. The height of the anal fin reaches 0.9 to 1.4 times the height of the second dorsal fin. Carcharhinus coatesi is gray or light brown on the back with a bronze sheen. The ventral side and the lower flanks are whitish. On the second dorsal fin there is a black spot on the upper one to two thirds of the fin. The remaining fins are monochrome or show lighter outer edges. The number of vortices is between 134 and 147. There are no spray holes . The teeth are relatively numerous, 24 to 26 in a row of teeth in the upper jaw, 23 to 25 in the lower jaw. Upper and lower teeth differ in shape and size.

Systematics

The shark was in 1939 by the Australian ichthyologist Gilbert Percy Whitley based on a single copy under the name Platypodon coatesi described , but in 1982 by Garrick with the blackspot shark ( Carcharhinus sealei ) as synonymous . 2012 William T. White revalidated the species after examining and comparing several specimens of C. coatesi and C. sealei . Within the genus Carcharhinus , C. coatesi belongs to the C. sealei - C. dussumieri group, small Indo-Pacific sharks, which all have similar teeth, a similar fin and snout shape and always have a dark spot on the second dorsal fin, while all others Fins are monochrome.
