Carchesium polypinum is a single-celled cell from the family of the bell animals (Vorticellidae).

features

Individual animals reach a size of up to 145 µm, colonies are up to 3 mm in size. The pedunculate muscle is interrupted at each branch. This enables the individual individuals to contract independently of one another. The stems contract in a spiral. The individuals are slender and bell-shaped. Their outer skin is striped across.

Occurrence and way of life

Carchesium polypinum is cosmopolitan . The species occurs in stagnant and slowly flowing, heavily polluted waters. It settles on detritus , stones, aquatic plants, and aquatic animals such as insects . It feeds on bacteria.
