Carhenge ( English car 'car', -henge von Stonehenge ) is a work of art near the American city of Alliance , Nebraska , which was modeled on the Neolithic megalithic circles of Stonehenge .

Jim Reinders' project was inaugurated before the summer solstice of 1987 and is now so well known that a visitor center was opened in the summer of 2006.

Instead of stones, Carhenge is made of American cars sprayed with gray paint. The 38 classic cars were placed in a circle 29 meters in diameter. Some cars were set up vertically, anchored 1.5 meters deep in the ground and some of them were welded together using horizontally positioned cars. A Cadillac from 1962 serves as the counterpart to the Heel Stone .

Three cars were buried and one car was added as a tombstone that reads:

“Here lie three bones of foreign cars. They served our purpose while Detroit slept. Now Detroit is awake and America's great! "

“There are three remains of foreign cars here. They did their job while Detroit slept. Now Detroit has woken up and America is big! "
