Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander Medal
The Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander Medal was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded on March 5, 1954 in three stages, bronze , silver and gold , once on June 12, 1956 on the occasion of the commemoration year Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander , a pioneer of democratic schools, was donated. Why the medal not like its role model with K instead of C.was written is unclear. The medal itself was awarded to teachers, school officials and educational scientists who had made outstanding contributions to building a democratic school.
Appearance and wearing style
The medal, which was either bronze, silver-plated or gold-plated according to the level awarded, has a diameter of 36.5 mm and shows on its obverse the bust of Wanders with his embossed dates of birth and death 1803 and 1879 as seen from the viewer . Among these dates of life there are two crossed laurel branches bent upwards, which take up about a quarter of the medal's circumference. The rest is made up of the inscription: >> EVERYTHING COLLECTES UNDER THE FLAG OF UNITY >> . The reverse of the medal shows the outline of the Wartburg at the top and the five-line inscription below: FOR AWARD-WINNING / ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE COMBAT / FOR THE GERMAN / DEMOCRATIC SCHOOL This is followed by a blank line and the date of the award: 12.6.1954 . The whole thing is enclosed by two laurel branches that are crossed at the bottom and bent upwards and arranged in a semicircle. It should be mentioned that at the intersection of the crossed laurel branches the small letters KR are embossed on top , which stand for the initials of the designer of the medal and the hallmark MB (Berlin Mint) can be seen below . The medal was worn on a 35 mm wide and 22 mm high black, red and gold ribbon on the upper left side of the chest. The loop itself is held in place by a 4.7 mm wide metal loop, which corresponds to the color of the awarded level. The ribbon itself was also an interim clip.
