In the years 1892 and 1893 the hospital was built by C. G. Großmann with an endowment capital of 50,000 marks , which was inaugurated in 1894 in honor of the founder as the Carl-Großmann-Stift . When it opened, the clinic had nine hospital rooms with 17 beds and was considered a milestone in medical care in the area. Eduard Linke (1858–1942) became the institution's first senior physician. He was 1914 by the Saxon King Friedrich August III. appointed to the medical council. Linke held the position of senior physician until his retirement in 1936.

For example, the main building was expanded in 1915, and a new laboratory building was built next to the clinic in 1930. Even after the end of the Second World War , the hospital was further expanded and rebuilt.

District hospital / women's clinic

From 1967 the monastery functioned as a women's and maternity clinic for the Bischofswerda district , established in 1952 , and many children from neighboring towns in the Dresden-Land district were born in Großröhrsdorf. The birth rate rose steadily until the 1980s. For example, there were 694 births in 1974, 794 children were born in 1980, and 1984 is the record year with 987 newborns. In 1984, the merger took place with the Bischofswerdaer hospital to the district hospital Bischofswerda , Grossroehrsdorf continued to be used as birth and Women's Hospital.

"Anyone who was born in the Bischofswerda district was born in Großröhrsdorf."

- Dietrich Krause, City and District Council, 2009

After the fall of the Wall in 1989, there was a sharp decline in the birth rate in Großröhrsdorf; in 1993 the number was only 266. In the 1990s, the hospital in Bischofswerda was completely rebuilt as the Oberlausitz clinic , so the Großröhrsdorf location was no longer needed and in the Closed March 1998.

Whereabouts

Clinic building 2014

After the hospital was closed, the property was no longer used. The buildings were partially barricaded against vandalism and left to decay. In 2009 the demolition of the plant was discussed for the first time. However, the buildings remained standing. As an alternative use of the hospital, the conversion as a hospice was considered, but this project failed due to a lack of investors and because the Saxon government raised the objection that there would be little need for such a facility in rural areas.

In 2011, the building and property office of the Bautzen district office tried to sell the area including the buildings. The buildings were described in the offer as in need of renovation , potential interested parties should have presented a usage concept and obtained approval for the purchase from the Bautzen district council . In September 2014, the city council of Großröhrsdorf approved the demolition of the building and the subsequent revitalization of the property in a public meeting. In November 2019 the building was completely demolished.
