Carl Abbott

Carl John Abbott (born December 3, 1944 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) is an American historian and urbanist.

Abbott studied at Swarthmore College ( BA 1966) and at the University of Chicago ( MA 1967; Ph.D. 1971). He began teaching in 1971 as an assistant professor at the University of Denver . From 1972 to 1978 he taught at Old Dominion University , from 1978 until today at the Department of Urban Studies at Portland State University . His research focus is American urban history , especially that of the West and Midwest.
