Carl Anders (General)

Carl Ulrich Paul Anders (born August 31, 1893 ; † January 28, 1972 ) was a major general in the German Wehrmacht in World War II .

Life

Anders completed an officer training after attending school and took part in the First World War. In 1916 he was promoted to first lieutenant.

After the end of the war he was accepted into the newly founded Reichswehr on January 19, 1919 . There he rose to major in 1937.

From February 6 to October 28, 1940, he was in command of the 1st Battalion of the 505th Infantry Regiment of the 291st Infantry Division and as such was promoted to lieutenant colonel on April 1, 1940 . Subsequently, he was briefly commander of the 1st battalion of the 581st Infantry Regiment of the 306th Infantry Division between October 28 and November 18, 1940 and from November 18, 1941 to January 11, 1942 initially acting commander and then until on September 8, 1944, commander of the 484th Infantry Regiment of the 254th Infantry Division . There he was promoted to colonel on April 1, 1942 .

After Anders was acting commander of the 168th Infantry Division from September 8 to December 11, 1944 during the absence of Lieutenant General Werner Schmidt-Hammer . After a subsequent reserve position, he was first acting commander on December 31, 1944 and then commander of the 88th Infantry Division on January 15, 1945 and remained in this position until the division was broken up in the course of the Vistula-Oder operation of the Red Army on January 31, 1945. On January 30, 1945, because there was no knowledge of his capture in Berlin, he was promoted to major general and on January 31, 1945 was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he was released on October 28, 1955 .
