Carl Biebighhäuser
Carl Biebighäuser (born December 3, 1842 in Barmen (today a district of Wuppertal ); † May 18, 1900 there ) was a German robber chief. He was known as the "Bergische Robin Hood" , who was up to mischief in the Bergisches Land with a small band of robbers of 20 men.
Life
Born in Barmer, he was a dyer by profession . He is said to have distributed most of his booty to the poor and needy. It remains unclear whether he just stole or really robbed people as well. In the 1870s, Biebighäuser was up to mischief in the Wupper valley . From Elberfeld to Barmen, between Schwelm , Neviges and Altena , he was known as “Robin Hood” or “ Schinderhannes ” of the Bergisches Land , and was a celebrity of his time.
On the night of March 30, 1874, Biebighäuser was caught by treason in a cave on Mirker Busch and arrested. The trial, which was disturbed by countless tumults (July 24 to 29, 1874), did not end until the court building and the adjacent streets had been cleared on July 29, 1874 at 1 a.m. But “ Wuppertal people don't hang, they would have it .” Only twelve days later, Biebighäuser managed to escape. By return of mail he wrote the Barmer Zeitung , which promptly published his humiliating poem. The Elberfelder Born Verlag even published an epic about "the bad villain". Finally, Biebighäuser and his gang were recognized during one of his numerous visits to taverns, arrested again and finally imprisoned for ten years.
After many years in prison and returning to the valley, Biebighäuser made the acquaintance of a patrol officer, piquantly in an "establishment" on the Fuhr , today's bank of Iceland. This circumstance led to Biebighäuser's arrest again. He was regarded as no longer resocializable and an attempt was made to deport him to America. A short time later, however, Carl Biebighäuser was back. He claimed that he had not been allowed to enter America in the first place and had been sent back straight away : "In America these bad peoples had enjoyed it, but they couldn't break it ". Back in the Barmen, Biebighäuser opened a vegetable shop in Parliamentstrasse 7, which he ran until the end of his days.
Biebighäuser died on May 18, 1900 in Barmen.
Artistic examination of Biebighhäuser in the present
As various examples show, the memory of Biebigh houses is still preserved.
In the Bergische Heimatspiele , which are performed annually in Remscheid - Lüttringhausen , one of the pieces is entitled "Biebighäuser" .
The Wuppertal actor, speaker and director Olaf Reitz produced an audio book about Biebighäuser in 2007.
