Carl Christian Tofte

Carl Christian Tofte (* 1969 in Farum , Denmark ) is a Danish book illustrator, visual artist and rock musician . His artistic focus is the neotropical avifauna .

Life

Tofte's interest in South American nature began early on. As a child he made clay models of hummingbirds, using illustrations from his books as a template. Inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian and Jon Fjeldsås , he decided to become an illustrator himself and went on several study trips to South America, including his first to Bolivia in December 1989. Until March 1990 he also visited Peru, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil . Further stays in South America followed in 1996, 2004 and 2005. For his lifelike bird drawings as well as studies of other animals and plants, Tofte traveled large parts of the world, including Turkey, southern Europe, Lapland, Greenland, New York, India, New Zealand, Scandinavia, China and New Guinea. From 1994 to 2000 he studied communication design at the Kunstakademiets Designskole in Copenhagen .

Tofte has worked as an illustrator in several national and international works, including Grønlands dyr & planter by Benny Gensbøl (1998), Politikens store fuglebog by Tommy Dybbro (2004), Rovfugle i felten by Tofte (2007, 2015), The Rare Birds Year Book by Erik Hirschfeld (2008, 2009), Strandbogen: naturoplevelser ved hav og strand (German: The beach book: Nature experiences on the sea and beach ) by Willy Johannsen (2010) and Tranedans (German: dance of the cranes ) by Tofte (2011). In 2002 he provided the illustration for the first scientific description of the Pernambuco pygmy owl ( Glaucidium mooreorum ). Since 2004 he has been drawing for Fugle og Natur , the magazine of Dansk Ornitologisk Forening , the Danish partner organization of BirdLife International . In 2016 the book Birds of Bolivia by Sebastian K. Herzog and James V. Remsen was published , in which Tofte was involved as a draftsman.

In addition to his drawing work, Tofte is also a musician. In 1999 he played as bassist on the EP The Psi and in 2005 on the album Pockets Of Resistance 1998-2004 by Sfu * ma * to. Since 1996 he has been the guitarist of the Obstinate Esther group.
