Carl Friedrich Christian Buddeus

Carl Friedrich Christian Buddeus (born June 27, 1775 in Gotha ; † January 1, 1864 there ) was a German painter , draftsman and engraver .

Life

After studying at the Salzmann School in Schnepfenthal , Carl Buddeus worked there as a drawing teacher and then went to Russia . For a few years he was a private tutor on the island of Ösel , where he made his first drawings of Estonia in 1809/1810 . Later Buddeus worked as a tutor and illustrator near Pskov and Saint Petersburg . In 1820 his two booklets with hand-colored lithographs were published in Leipzig, in which the life and people of Russia were depicted. After returning to Estonia, the artist settled near Reval on the Kopli peninsula. In 1845 Buddeus married the daughter of the Reval wine merchant Hartmuth. A few years later he and his wife retired to Thuringia .
