Carl Hermann Kraeling

Carl Hermann Kraeling (born March 10, 1897 in Brooklyn , † November 14, 1966 in New Haven ) was an American Christian archaeologist . He is known for his publications on the synagogue and Christian chapel of Dura Europos .

Life

Carl Kraeling, the son of a Lutheran pastor from Brooklyn, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1918 and then studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York and Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia , where he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1926 . In 1923 he married Elsie Dittmer and became a Lutheran pastor ordained . He worked for nine years in various positions at Lutheran Theological Seminary .

In 1932 he became an assistant professor (later associate professor) of New Testament studies at Yale University's Divinity School . In 1947 he was appointed director of the Department of Languages ​​and Literatures of the Middle East at Yale while holding the Chair of New Testament Studies at the Divinity School. In 1950 he became director of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago . He was also president of the American Schools of Oriental Research from 1949 to 1954 . In 1963 he retired .
