Measure and Value - November / December 1938 issue

Measure and value. Bimontals for free German culture was a German exile magazine that was published in Zurich by Emil Oprechts and was published from September 1937 to October 1940. The editors were Thomas Mann and Konrad Falke . The editor-in-chief was initially the journalist Ferdinand Lion , then from November 1939 Golo Mann .

In contrast to other exile journals , which had a decidedly political orientation, measure and value were columnist and cultural-historical. In addition to essays, reviews and glosses, the first edition also featured a chapter from Thomas Mann's novel Lotte in Weimar . The magazine published articles by Bertolt Brecht , Alfred Döblin , Joseph Roth , Franz Werfel , Stefan Zweig and others.

After Golo Mann's flight to the United States in the spring of 1940, the Swiss editorial team was orphaned. A temporarily intended continuation of the magazine after the war was not implemented.
