Konrad Falke

Konrad Falke (born March 19, 1880 in Aarau , † April 28, 1942 in Eustis , Florida ; real name Karl Frey ) was a Swiss writer .

Life

Konrad Falke was the son of a bank director. He began a study of the jurisprudence at the University of Neuchatel , then switched to the subjects of philosophy and literature , which he in Heidelberg studied and Zurich. In 1903 he earned his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Zurich with a thesis on Wilhelm Waiblinger .

From 1906 he taught German literary history as a private lecturer at the ETH Zurich and from 1911 to 1912 German literature at the University of Zurich.

From 1912 he lived as a freelance writer and private scholar in Zurich and Italy . During the First World War he expressed his rejection of German imperialism ; after 1933 he was also a staunch opponent of National Socialist ideology and dictatorship .

From 1937 to 1940 he edited the exile magazine Maß und Wert together with Thomas Mann . Falke spent the last years of his life in the United States from 1939 . He died of typhoid fever .

Konrad Falke was the author of novels ( The Children's Crusade and Jesus of Nazareth are now considered to be his most important works), short stories , essays , poems and an extensive dramatic work influenced by classicism ; he also translated from Greek , Latin and Italian .
