Adalberto Luitpoldo Elena Giuseppe Maria von Savoyen-Genoa ( Italian Adalberto Luitpoldo Elena Giuseppe Maria di Savoia-Genova ; born March 19, 1898 in Turin , † December 15, 1982 ibid) was an Italian nobleman from the House of Savoy and general .

Adalberto of Savoy-Genoa was a son of King Victor Emanuel II's nephew and brother of Queen Margaret of Italy , Duke Thomas of Savoy-Genoa (1854-1931), and Isabella of Bavaria (1863-1924) . He was the fourth child of the couple and had two older brothers, the older sister Bona Margherita of Savoy-Genoa , as well as a younger sister and a younger brother. His brother Filiberto (1895–1990; Duke of Pistoia ) was also a general. His brothers Ferdinando (1884–1963; Duke of Genoa) and Eugenio (1906–1996; Duke of Ancona ) were both admirals.

On September 22, 1904 he was given by King Victor Emanuel III. awarded the title Duke of Bergamo . He himself was never married and had no children. However, the Duke of Bergamo had a very long relationship with a Piedmontese aristocrat, which, however, did not lead to the marriage due to the lack of consent from King Umberto II as head of the entire House of Savoy.

Military career

Adalberto of Savoy-Genoa joined the Italian army as a soldier. In the First World War he fought at the front. After that, his military career took place between Italy and Italian East Africa . In October 1924 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . From 1927 to 1930 he attended a military school for general staff officers. In March 1929 he became a colonel . From 1931 to 1934 he commanded the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Savoia Cavalleria . On March 1, 1934, he was promoted to brigadier general. He was in command of the 6th Infantry Brigade from 1934 to 1935. From September 1935 to February 1936 he was deputy division commander of the 24th Gran Sasso Infantry Division in the Abyssinian War . He was named major general in February 1936 . With the promotion he was initially given command of the 24th Gran Sasso Infantry Division . In July 1936, the command of the 58th Legnano Infantry Division followed . On March 15, 1938 he was promoted to lieutenant general . He was later given command of the 3rd Corps Milano until September 10, 1939 . On December 14, 1939, he was appointed general. When Italy entered World War II , he was commander of the 8ª Armata (8th Army, 1940-1942) and in 1943 the 7ª Armata .

He is buried in the royal crypt of the Superga basilica .
