Carl Josef Pollak

Carl Josef Pollak (born April 5, 1877 in Vienna ; † April 10, 1937 there ) was an Austrian caricaturist , press illustrator , portrait painter and commercial artist . He usually only signed as "Carl Josef".

Life

Pollak studied at the Vienna Art Academy with Christian Griepenkerl and in Prague with Václav Brožík . At first he worked as a painter. In 1904 he published drawings from the Russo-Japanese War in the " Interesting Sheet ". From then on he was a successful newspaper illustrator. From 1909 to 1914 he toured India and Japan. After 1918 he worked in Vienna for various satirical magazines such as " Die Muskete " and " Götz von Berlichingen ". Pollak always took a liberal and critical standpoint. In addition, he designed numerous posters, mostly with a satirical stance, for the “ Illustrierte Zeitung ”, and after the First World War also for politics. Various edited volumes with his caricatures have appeared.
