Carl Kunst was the son of a secret secretary in the Bavarian War Ministry . He first studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich with Maximilian Dasio . On November 5, 1903, he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Arts for the drawing school with Peter Halm and Franz von Stuck .

During his short creative period, Carl Kunst designed numerous posters, advertising stamps and illustrated books. Among his employers are the Isidor Bach clothing store, the Stollwerck company , Marco Polo Tee, Kunstanstalt Reichold & Land, Sport Schwaiger Munich, Belgeri Werk, Bregenz, Bazar Nuremberg.

Carl Kunst designed a series of advertising stamps for Roald Amundsen's South Pole trip . His postcards from the 1910s are particularly artistically valuable. He designed a whole series of postcards with famous Munich sights: shades of brown and strong bright colors create a shrill, concise contrast. Large areas of color that suggest sky or water, sometimes dots of clouds or waves, the generous use of the colors orange, yellow, purple or turquoise are almost forerunners of the pop art of the 1960s.

In October 1912 there was an extensive article by Karl J. Luther in the 4th issue of the 3rd volume of the "Mitteilungen des Verein der Posterfreunde" (p. 139–144, p. 196)
