Carl Lindner, Jr. (born April 22, 1919 in Norwood , Ohio - † October 17, 2011 ) was an American entrepreneur .

Life

Lindner left school at the age of 14 and began helping in the family business, which he continuously expanded over the decades to become United Dairy Farmers . Together with his three sons, he held over 40 percent of the American Financial Group . After the suicide of the manager Elihu Menashe Black , Lindner took control of the US group United Fruit Company through his American Financial Group and renamed the group to Chiquita Brands International .

According to Forbes Magazine , Lindner was one of the richest Americans during his lifetime. Linder was a co-owner of the Cincinnati Reds baseball club until he sold most of his stake to manager Bob Castellini in 2005.

Lindner made significant financial donations to the Republican Party , of which he was a member, and in 2004 Lindner was a main sponsor of George W. Bush's election campaign . He also made donations to private Christian schools in Cincinnati such as the Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy and the University of Cincinnati 's College of Business. For his financial donations to the Jewish community, he was selected Man of the Year by the United Jewish Appeal and received the Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund.

Lindner was married to Edyth Bailey and had three sons.
