Carl Naughton (* 1970 in Croydon ) is a German-English non-fiction and textbook author, linguist and educational psychologist .

Life

Naughton studied German, Romance languages and theater education. He completed his studies at the Westfälische Wilhelmsuniversität in Münster with a Magister Artium (MA) degree in 2000. He then did his doctorate summa cum laude at the University of Cologne in the subjects of linguistics, educational psychology and Romance studies on the subject of “Truth on the Stage "(2005).

Naughton researched and taught from 2000 to 2010 at the human sciences faculty at the University of Cologne. He gave lectures at Hermann Rüppell's chair in the field of educational psychology. His research focused on how people learn more easily, which factors help to process information more easily and which media are either helpful or disruptive. Together with Gertrud Kemper and Hermann Rüppell, among other things, he worked out a method to train working memory. With Gertrud Kemper, he further developed the concept of “visual rhetoric”, which prepares communication with PowerPoint in a visual, associative and retrievable manner. Together they developed the "Retention Quintet". It consists of five rules based on cognitive psychology for safe and effective knowledge transfer.

Naughton has recently researched and published on the subject of "curiosity". Since it was founded in 2016, he has been a member of the “Merck Curiosity Council”, in which German and international scientists such as Todd Kashdan (USA), Kunlin Wei (China) and Andreas Steinle (Germany) are involved. Together with the Merck Group , the Council develops "curiosity management" interventions and makes these interventions available to other companies. Naughton develops evidence-based interventions to strengthen the four dimensions of curiosity (curiosity for knowledge, openness to other ideas, tolerance of tension and creative problem solving).

Naughton also conducts research on the subject of “digitized working world”. As part of a "digitization study", he investigated the question of which mental skills employees should develop in order to counter the technical and psychological stresses associated with digital work.

Naughton is currently researching cyber psychology - how digital media can be used therapeutically .

Naughton is also the founder of Braincheck GmbH and an officially licensed alternative practitioner in psychotherapy , certified in cognitive behavioral therapy. He is a member of the American Board for Hypnotherapy, ABTLT (American Board for Time Line Therapy) and the Wiesbaden Press Club.
