Carl Walther (librarian)

Carl Walther (born January 11, 1877 in Wiesbaden ; † November 17, 1960 there ) was a German librarian .

Life

Carl Walther, son of a post secretary, studied by put- graduate engineering, law and political science in Hanover and Berlin before 1901 he the state exam took off. Walther then held an assistant position at the TH Berlin, and in 1912 he joined the library service. After his participation in the First World War , he was the librarian of the library of the Association of German Engineers in 1919 and 1920 , which he reorganized.

In 1921 Carl Walther was entrusted with the provisional management of the library of the RWTH Aachen , in 1927 he moved to the TH Berlin as director, returned to Aachen a year later, took over the management of the library of the TH until he was on leave from work because of his Belonging to the Christian community . Walther - he completely reorganized the library - was retired in 1942.

Carl Walther's commitment was to a German complete edition of the decimal classification , which he was instrumental in developing. In 1960 he was awarded honorary membership by the Association of German Engineers. In 1962 the German Standards Committee founded the Carl Walther Prize in memory of Walther, who died in 1960, for outstanding work in the field of decimal classification.
