Carla Ronci (born April 11, 1936 in Torre Pedrera near Rimini , † April 2, 1970 in Rimini) was an Italian consecrated lay Christian. The one recognized by the Holy See as the Venerable Servant of God (Venerabilis Dei serva) is known as the saint of Vespa .

Life

As the eldest child of the fisherman Mario Ronci and his wife Jolanda Casalboni, she grew up in humble circumstances and learned the trade of a seamstress after elementary school. After intensive encounters with the Sisters of the Ordo Sanctae Ursulae in their parish and the celebrations of the Holy Year 1950 , their spiritual change began. She was involved in the apostolate of her community, especially with children and young people, and was active on several levels in L'Azione Cattolica Italiana . She deepened her lay ministry with the private acceptance of the vows of chastity and poverty in 1956 and 1957. Even after taking the vows, she remained a modern young woman, and she was - spiritually - aware of her femininity. The desire to join the Ursuline Order became more and more pronounced. Finally she began the novitiate with the Ursulines of Gandino in Scanzorosciate near Bergamo. Due to family pressure, especially from the father, the novitiate ended after only three months. Through private connections she got in touch with the secular institute Mater Misericordiae in Macerata . There she made her official vows and was able to carry out her apostolate in her family and in her parish in Torre Pedrera.

effect

Through her spiritual life with the main focus - pronounced love for Jesus, the love of neighbor and joy, the emphasis on femininity as well as the promotion of the sanctification of the priests - she became a role model in the region. Because of her modern way of life (appreciation of her clothes and her appearance and constant use of the Vespa as a means of transport), she was popularly referred to as the saint of Vespa and saint of joy quickly after her death . At the age of only 34 she developed lung cancer and died on April 7, 1970 in Rimini. She is buried in the parish church in Torre Pedrera.

beatification

Very soon after the death of Carla Ronci, the call for her beatification became loud. After the usual examination of life by the local bishop in Rimini had been completed, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints gave its approval in 1982 to carry out the process of beatification. After the investigations by the Roman Congregation, on July 7th 1997 Pope John Paul II announced the decree on the heroic degree of virtue of the Venerable Servant of God (Venerabilis Dei serva) Carla Ronci.
