Carleton Place [ ˈkɑɹltənˌpleɪ̯s ] is a city in Lanark County in eastern Ontario , Canada . The city is located about 45 km southwest of the Canadian capital Ottawa on the Mississippi Lake or Mississippi River . The river should not be confused with the river of the same name flowing through the USA .

In 1819 the place was chosen as a building site for a mill. A village had grown up by 1870, and in 1890 city rights were granted.

Carleton Place has about 9,400 residents and offers many recreational opportunities. The proximity to the lake offers all possibilities of water sports (fishing, water skiing, canoeing etc.). Therefore, this region is often used by the residents of Ottawa to relax in summer.
