Carlos Alberto Joaquin Plagemann

Carlos Alberto Joaquin Plagemann (born October 18, 1858 in Valparaíso , † 1908 in Hamburg ) was a German-Chilean mineralogist .

Plagemann's father was the founder and owner of the first Chilean beer brewery in Valparaíso . In 1868 he came to Hamburg, where he attended the Johanneum . He then studied mineralogy and mining at the Philipps University in Marburg and at the Bergakademie Freiberg and completed his studies with a doctorate. Then he returned to Chile. Between 1886 and 1888 he undertook several geoscientific expeditions to the Atacama Desert and moved to Hamburg in 1889.

Plagemann mainly dealt with the saltpeter deposits in Chile.

His collection of mainly Chilean minerals came to the Mineralogical Museum of the University of Hamburg in 1911 through his sister .

On June 12, 1883 he became a member of the Leopoldina in the Section for Mineralogy and Geology.
