Carlos García Vélez (born April 29, 1867 in Jiguaní east of Bayamo , † November 6, 1963 in Havana ) was a Cuban dentist and ambassador .

Life

Carlos García Vélez was one of the sons of Isabel and Calixto García , who also included General Justo Garcia and Fausto.

Desperate about the outcome of the Ten Years War , his father tried to kill himself in 1878 with a gun shot under the chin. The experience he gained in treating the injury made him want to become a dentist . He studied at the Colegio de Cirugía de San Carlos in Madrid, wrote articles for the Revista Odontología de Madrid and edited the Revista Estomatológica in Cuba with Louis Oscar Amoëdo y Valdes .

In 1895 he stopped publishing and devoted himself as a general to the Cuban War of Independence . In 1901 he was inspector general of the Cuban penal system.

Tomás Estrada Palma sent him to Porfirio Díaz as Ministre plénipotentiaire , and his letter of accreditation was addressed to Foreign Minister Ignacio Mariscal . On August 25, 1902, he was accredited in Mexico City .

On April 9, 1909, he became envoy extraordinary and Ministre plénipotentiaire in Washington, DC In the same year he was envoy extraordinary and Ministre plénipotentiaire in Buenos Aires . In 1913 he founded the Cuban Section of the Boy Scouts .

From 1916 to March 22, 1924 he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s . On March 22, 1924, in New York City, he passed a damning verdict on the government of Alfredo Zayas y Alfonso and was immediately removed from the diplomatic service.
