Like many of his contemporaries, he immersed himself in the genre of nativismo and painted scenes of gauchos and creoles . His artistic activity also extended to the historical genre. His most famous works in this field are the pictures Congreso de Abril de 1813 and Artigas en el Hervidero , which is also on the back of the $ 1000 banknote of the Uruguayan peso.
