Carlos António Alves dos Reis (born September 28, 1950 in Angra do Heroísmo ) is a Portuguese literary scholar and journalist. 1988–98 and since 20111 he was or is a full professor at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Coimbra . He is an important person in the cultural and educational life of Portugal, who is of international importance and especially for the entire lusophonic language and cultural area. He has made a name for himself as a literary scholar (literary theory, Lusitan studies and comparative studies ), education politician (university rector, director of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal ) and publicist. He is an advocate of the orthography convention Portuguese 1990 and a common educational and cultural policy of the Lusophonie. In 2019 he was awarded the Prémio Eduardo Lourenço.

Life

Born and raised in the Azores , he has lived in Coimbra since 1968. He studied Romance philology at the university there and immediately after graduating there began teaching literary theory as well as Spanish and Portuguese literature as an assistant. From his first work on Eça de Queiroz (first book published in 1975), which at the same time introduced structuralist narrative analysis in post-revolutionary Portugal, he soon made a name for himself as the best-known specialist on the life and work of this important author. He not only created the teaching subject Estudos Queirosianos at the University of Coimbra and contributed to didactics at the grammar schools, but has also planned and directed the project of a critical complete edition , which was initiated in 1992 .

From 1998 to 2002 he was director of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal in Lisbon. Under his leadership, the openly accessible digitization of central texts of Portuguese literature, culture and philosophy was initiated. As early as 1988 among the co-founders of the national distance university Universidade Aberta , he was elected its rector in 2006. At the same time as his re-election in January 2010, he was the first Portuguese to be elected President of EADTU - European Association of Distance Teaching Universities . In 2011 he resigned as rector and has since returned to teaching and research at the University of Coimbra, particularly in the field of narratology .
