Karl Heinrich "Carlos" Schneider (born July 19, 1889 in Rebstein , Canton St. Gallen , † May 19, 1932 ibid) was a Swiss painter.

Life

Winter landscape : oil painting (100 × 140 cm) from the 1920s

Carlos Schneider lost his mother at the age of seven. As a child, but also later, he was plagued by health problems. This repeatedly resulted in longer spa stays, which strongly influenced his life. It was during one of these phases that Schneider began to draw and paint. From 1916 to 1919 he attended painting schools in Lausanne and Geneva. At the beginning of 1920 he traveled to the French Riviera and then to Florence for further training. In 1921 he moved to Munich and studied with Josef Eberz at the Debschitz School .

His partner Barbara Augustin was very committed to Carlos Schneider. So she gave up a career as an actress. For a large number of pictures she sat as a model for him. In 1923 he founded his own studio in Munich.

In 1931 he returned to Rebstein for health reasons, where he died on May 19, 1932.

Schneider's work includes woodcuts, drawings, watercolors, gouaches and oil paintings. His motifs are landscapes, family, portraits and pictures with a religious background. The frequent subject of cacti is striking in his still lifes.

Its importance was only recognized in Switzerland when his friend Ernst Osterwalder (1899–1985) organized memorial exhibitions.
