Carmel McSharry

Carmel E. McSharry (born August 18, 1926 in Dublin , † March 4, 2018 in London ) was an Irish actress .

life and career

Carmel McSharry grew up in London as the daughter of Irish parents. After finishing school, she worked as a secretary for the Unilever concern , and in her spare time she played in the company's theater group. Her talent shown here earned her admission to the Royal Academy of Arts , where she graduated with honors in acting in 1947. She made her debut in London's West End in the same year in John Boynton Priestley's play The Linden Tree , and in the following decades she also appeared regularly on the stage.

Between 1957 and 1997, Carmel McSharry made over 90 film and television appearances, most notably for her roles on British television. In the 1970s she was the main actress in the comedy series Beryl's Lot , in which she played the philosophically ambitious housewife Beryl Humphries . Between 1985 and 1992, the red-haired character actress appeared as the god-fearing neighbor of the unfriendly Alf Garnett in 41 episodes of the television series In Sickness and in Health , which was the British counterpart to One Heart and One Soul . She is probably best known to German audiences for her portrayal of Mary , Ricky Schroder's self-confident midwife , in the Christmas classic The Little Lord (1980). In the late 1990s she retired from acting.

In 1949 she entered into a later divorced marriage with fellow actor Derek Briggs, and they had three children. Her daughter Tessa Bell-Briggs (* 1952) also works in the acting business. Carmel McSharry died in March 2018 at the age of 91.
