Carmelo Barone

Carmelo Barone (born April 3, 1956 in Avola ) is a former Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

The Sicilian Barone had some successes as an amateur . In 1975 he was the winner of the road race at the Mediterranean Games in Algiers and vice-champion of the amateurs behind Roberto Ceruti . In 1976 he took part in the Summer Olympic Games in Montreal . When Bernt Johansson won , he was 31st in the Olympic road race . In the team time trial , he and his team could not build on the Italian traditions, his four-man was only classified as 11th. In 1977 he became a professional driver in a small Italian team. Nevertheless, he was able to achieve five victories in his first year as a professional , including the Coppa Bernocchi and the Trofeo Baracchi together with Olympic champion Johansson as a partner. Until 1983, the year in which his career ended, he still won races such as the Giro dell'Umbria in 1979 and the Giro del Veneto in 1980. In 1980 he also won a stage in the Giro d'Italia . He drove the Giro six times, and 18th place in 1979 was his best result in the overall standings.
