The carnidae (Carnidae) are a family of Diptera (Diptera). Here they are counted among the flies . They are very small and reach lengths of one to two millimeters.
Occurrence
Plumed flies can be found partly on flowers, partly on decaying materials. The larvae develop in organic waste of all kinds. For example, the representatives of the largest genus of plumage flies Meoneura live mainly on manure and faeces of all kinds, carrion ( necrophagy ) and decaying plant parts ( compost ). Sometimes they can also be found in bird nests, such as Meoneura lamellata .
Way of life
The hawk louse fly ( Carnus hemapterus ) is a blood-sucking parasite on birds that is found mainly in nestlings of cave-breeding birds. In this species, the imago hatches winged from the pupa, but, like many louse flies (Hippoboscidae) , sheds its wings when it reaches a suitable host and then stays mainly under the wings or in the host's nest. After losing the wings, the flight muscles are also reduced. In females, the abdomen swells considerably during egg development, and the eggs are laid in the nesting material. The larvae feed on the organic material in the litter. The pupae overwinter.
Systematics
Around 70 representatives of this group are known worldwide, 15 of them are to be found in Central Europe, and only seven live in Germany. In Europe, the family of plumage flies is represented by three genera and 39 species.
