Carol I Mosque

The Carol I Mosque (also Marea Mosque of Constanța and Mahmud II Mosque ; Roman. Moscheea Carol ) was built from 1910 to 1912; It was commissioned by the then Romanian King Charles I , after whom it was finally named. It is located in Stradă Arhiepiscopiei nr. 5 in the eastern Romanian city of Constanța .

The engineer George (Gogu) Constantinescu and the architect Victor Stefanescu were involved in the planning for the construction ; the Konya mosque in Turkey served as a model. The building is made of reinforced concrete and the minaret , built in the Moorish style , is 47 meters high. A mosque stood on the site as early as 1822.
