The Carolus Thermen in Aachen are a leisure-oriented thermal bath with an attached sauna facility . They were built from 1998 to 2001 according to plans by the Munich architect Rudolf Wienands . The thermal baths are operated by the municipal Kur- und Badegesellschaft mbH (KuBa), founded on December 30, 1932, which also takes on the tasks of spa administration for the state-recognized Aachen spa .

history

Entrance area of the Carolus Thermen

The thermal bath is named after Charlemagne , for whom the hot mineral springs in Aachen offered an important reason to build one of his palaces here. Aachen has a 2000-year bathing tradition, which suffered serious setbacks due to the destruction of numerous bathhouses in World War II . The last inner-city thermal bath - the Römerbad am Büchel - was closed in 1996. Until December 30, 2000, the spa in the Quellenhof on Monheimsallee was still in operation. The Carolus Thermen opened on February 9, 2001.

In the summer of 2007, extensive renovation and improvement measures were carried out, including renewing parts of the facade, replacing tiles and expanding the pampering world .

In July 2011 and July 2013, extensive basic cleaning and maintenance work was carried out, including minor repairs and some renovations. The steam bath in the thermal world had to be completely dismantled for "structural reasons".

After an elaborate new construction of the steam bath, it was opened in January 2012 under the name Strokkur . With an investment volume of around € 100,000, a brine steam bath was built that is modeled on the Icelandic geyser Strokkur .

A solarium designed as a caravanserai with heated sand and a simulated day / night change had to be finally closed in 2014, as no spare parts were available to fix a technical defect. Plans for a new use of the rooms are being worked on.
