Carolyn Shaw Bell Award
The Carolyn Shaw Bell Award is an annual award given by the American Economic Association (AEA) to a leading economist .
History and background
At its annual meeting in 1971, the American Economic Association initiated the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession , following various proposals relating to the topic , in order to monitor and eliminate possible gender discrimination within the profession. To mark the 25th anniversary of the committee, it was decided to offer a prize to honor outstanding personalities who, through their demeanor and their contributions to economics, have helped women advance further in the profession. In honor of the economist Carolyn Shaw Bell , who, as founding chairman of the committee, had a decisive influence on the committee and its charisma, the prize, which was first awarded in 1998, was named the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award . The award is officially presented at the annual meeting of the AEA in the following year.
