Janet Currie

Janet Marion Currie (born March 29, 1960 in Ontario ) is a Canadian - American economist and university professor .

Career, research and teaching

Currie initially studied at the University of Toronto . In 1982 she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors, and in the following year she graduated with a Master of Arts degree in economics. She then moved to Princeton University , where she completed her Ph.D. - Degree in economics.

After completing his studies, Currie first went to the University of California at Los Angeles as an assistant professor , and from July 1991 to the Boston Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1993 she returned to Los Angeles as an Associate Professor at the University of California , where she was appointed Full Professor in 1996. In July 2005, she took over the Charles E. Davidson Chair in Economics , before leaving college a year later for Columbia University . There she was a professor at the Faculty of Economics until summer 2009. In January of that year she took over the Sami Mnaymneh professorship. In June 2011 she returned to Princeton University, where she was appointed to the Henry Putnam Chair in Economics . At the same time, she took on the post of director of the Center for Health and Well Being at the university.

Since 2009, Currie has been the director of the National Bureau of Economic Research's children's research program . A year later she took over the post of editor-in-chief of the Journal of Economic Literature . In 2014/15 she was President of the Society of Labor Economists for one year .

In her research and teaching, Currie is largely focused on the health and wellbeing of children. In her previous work, she dealt in particular with state and non-state programs to improve health insurance , care within the framework of health systems , and nutrition programs for children.

In 2014 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 2019 to the National Academy of Sciences . In 2015 she received the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the American Economic Association . She is honorary doctor of the University of Zurich (2017) and the University of Lyon III (2016). From 1993 to 1995 she was a Sloan Research Fellow .
