The Carpentaria , officially called the CLS-4 Carpentaria , was one of four lightships that the central government of Australia, the Commonwealth, had built between 1917 and 1917.

The Carpentaria was used in places where lighthouses could not be built and navigation aids were required to warn ships of danger spots.

The Carpentaria served in the Merkara Shoals in Carpentaria Golf in Queensland . In 1983 it was towed into Bass Strait as it did not have its own engine and was used for shipping in the oil fields and came back in 1985.

The 21.6 m long and 8.5 m wide ship has a draft of 2.74 m and 164 tons of water displacement . The ship, painted red, is made of riveted steel and the fire was generated by a six-month supply of acetylene , and it could also emit acoustic signals.

The ship was decommissioned on March 31, 1985 and has been a museum ship at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney since 1987 .
